NYCC’ 09 Activision’s Marvel Games

As you have already read, Activision brought their biggest non-Marvel property, Prototype, to Comic Con. But, they also brought two of their major upcoming Marvel properties to the show: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. There was nothing playable for either game, but there was enough of a preview to gather concrete impressions about both games.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2

The game will center around the popular Civil War story that split the Marvel Universe down the middle over the concept of Superhero registration. You will play on either Captain America or Iron Man’s team. There isn’t much information out there about the game at the moment, but you can see the first trailer on this site. The game will release sometime this year.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

They were running demos in a theater every 15 minutes. After waiting in line, I was shown into the theater. There were about 40 people in the theater. What were our expectations? I think the Activision guy manning the line said it best: “A Wolverine game that doesn’t suck.” Suddenly the lights went down and I was treated to a demo of what may be the most visceral movie game ever and the most visceral game of the year. To say the game is violent doesn’t quite do it justice. Wolverine is at his feral best in this game. I saw decapitations, eviscerations and an incredible lunge move. I saw damage that healed itself and alternate costumes. It was frightening, it was stunning and it was incredible. I can’t wait to see more. It will be released alongside the movie in May.

It looks like it’s going to be another banner year for Activision.
