This is one of the reasons I love going to NYCC. Every so often, an unassuming company shows up with a big surprise. This year, MEGABloks was one of those companies. After being purchased by Mattel , and showing a Toy Fair lineup last year that consisted of lines for Halo, Call of Duty, and the Box Office bomb Terminator: Genisys, many wondered what the future would hold for them. At NYCC, we got our answer. It turns out that, quietly, MEGABloks was preparing a pretty kick-ass slate of product, including two HUGE new licenses. It turns out MEGABloks has obtained a license for the Original Star Trek series, and for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, covering both the original 80’s cartoon, and the current version, airing on Nickelodeon.
Both lines look amazing, with the Star Trek line featuring an incredible U.S.S. Enterprise, as well as a Klingon Bird of Prey. In addition to the ships, two playsets were announced: the Transporter Room and the Bridge.
For TMNT, The Classic Series will be “normal” size, with figures shown of the four Turtles, plus the Foot Soldiers, Rocksteady and Bebop. I was also told that a Shredder figure has been made, as has Splinter, though they did not make the trip to NYC. Meanwhile, there will also be a larger sized line with bigger, chunkier figures for kids, based on the currently airing animated series on Nickelodeon. To really make a statement announcing this new line, MEGABloks built the front of the famous Turtle Van “life-size” out of MegaBloks. It is a really cool statement piece. I was also told that Krang’s Android Body and the Technodrome are in the works. This looks to be an incredible year for MEGABloks fans, I will be very interesting to see how they build on these lines at Toy Fair.
