Next up, we visit the house that Todd built: McFarlane Toys.
FIGURES AND MORE @NYCC 2015: McFarlane Toys
Todd McFarlane is a world-famous comic artist and writer. He is the creator of Spawn, and one of the founders of Image Comics. It turns out, he is also a hell of a toy designer. For several years now, his company, McFarlane Toys, has been pumping out high quality figures for a number of properties. They are responsible for some of the best figures of professional athletes ever made, and made a huge name for themselves with their lines of figures based on the various games in the Halo video game franchise. More recently however, the company has received considerable acclaim for their figures based on The Walking Dead. Having been awarded the Master Toy License for both the comic books, and the TV Show, airing on AMC, Todd has taken this license and run with it, making several waves of the human characters, and some truly spectacular zombie figures, each with a different gruesome effect. The Waling Dead also provided the perfect property launch pad for Todd’s newest venture: building sets. Todd entered the construction toy arena as only he could last year, with a line of detailed miniature building sets based on The Waling Dead TV series,. The sets are incredibly detailed, and they come with equally detailed miniature figures based on the different characters. This year, while also expanding on his The Walking Dead building line, Todd announced the acquisition of a building set license for HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones. The first of these sets were on display at NYCC, and they were, of course, stunning. Here’s a look at what Todd was showing off at NYCC.
NFL
McFarlane’s popular line of sports figures continues with NFL Series 37, due in November, which is set to include: Darrelle Revis (New York Jets), Jimmy Graham (Seattle Seahawks), Odell Beckham Jr (New York Giants), Emmanuel Sanders (Denver Broncos), Marcus Mariota (Tennessee Titans), Jameis Winston (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and Antonio Brown (Pittsburgh Steelers). Each figure retails for $17.99
NBA
Also due in November is NBA Series 27, which is set to include: Anthony Davis (New Orleans Jazz), James Harden (Houston Rockets), Eric Bledsoe (Phoenix Suns), Klay Thompson (Golden State Warriors), Pau Gasol (Chicago Bulls), Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers) and Chris Paul (Los Angeles Clippers). Each figure will retail for $14.99. Also due is the NBA Championship 3 pack, featuring Andre Iguodala, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors. This pack also includes the NBA Championship Trophy and the MVP Trophy. The pack retails for $49.99.
Assassin’s Creed
At NYCC, McFarlane debuted Series 5 of their line based on the popular video game series. The lineup is set to consist of Il Tricolor E Ezio, Revolutionary Connor and Union Jacob Frye. They are set to release in 2016.
The Walking Dead
Available later this month are the 10″ Michonne Deluxe Figure and the Morgan with Walker & Spike Trap box set. Both of these items are $34.99. Also shown was a Comic Inspired Negan Resin Statue. It did not have a release date or price set, but it looked incredible.
The Walking Dead Building Sets
Last year, McFarlane put his foot in the construction toy door with the release of the first building sets based on The Walking Dead. Based on their success and the sets shown at NYCC, he seems poised to kick that door wide open. Continuing the commitment to intricate, screen accurate sets, McFarlane showed several exciting new sets. Releasing in October are: Wolves Not Far and Hospital Doors ($9.99 each). In 2016, McFarlane will release Road to Terminus ($9.99) and Sheriff Rick & Horse ($19.99). Also shown were prototypes for 3 sets with unknown release dates. They were: Barn Doors, Gas Station and Atlanta Alley.
Game of Thrones Building Sets
Announced this year, this was the East Coast debut of the upcoming building sets based on HBO’s Game of Thrones. And, what a coming out party it was! The sets are incredible, with the intricate detail we have come to expect from Todd and his team. Up first, in November, are The Iron Throne Room and the House Stark and Lannister Banner Packs. Following in 2016 is the Mother of Dragons set. Finally, shown, but not yet scheduled was the Attack on the Wall set. I don’t think it’s at all presumptuous to say that this line will probably be another huge hit for McFarlane.
McFarlane’s booth was jumping the entire show, but there were definitely points where it was way busier than others. That was because Todd himself decided to hold court periodically. Each of these informal sessions involved Todd holding an impromptu drawing class, dashing off sketches of Venom, Spider-Man, and, of course, Spawn, among others and then asking trivia questions to give away said sketches. It was something only Todd would do.
My thanks to Carmen Bryant and Todd McFarlane.
