TOY FAIR 2010: LEGO

From the danish words “leg godt”, meaning “play well”, LEGO is the undisputed world leader in construction toys, and one of very few iconic, universally identifiable toys. Every year, LEGO surpasses itself in quality and innovation, and this year is no different. This is one of my favorite briefings every year, as I still love to see what they come up with. So, here is what they cam up with this year. We’ll start the report with LEGO’s newest licenses and themes.

Prince of Persia: It came as a pleasant surprise to see that LEGO has obtained a license to make sets based on the upcoming Disney film “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”, due out this Summer. There are five sets planned, though only four were shown. It should be noted these sets feature the brand new Camel and Ostrich mini-figures. The sets shown were: 7569: Desert Attack (57 pieces, $10.99), 7570: The Ostrich Race (169 pieces, $19.99), 7571: Fight for the Dagger (258 pieces, $29.99) and 7573: Battle of Alamut (821 pieces, $79.99). The missing set is 7572: Quest Against Time (506 pieces, $49.99). It was not shown because it deals with a major plot point in the film. However, I will say that it has a LEGO Light Brick in it. These sets will be available in April.

Next, we’ll cover new set in existing licensed themes.

It seems only fitting that we should start with LEGO’s first license: Star Wars. Celebrating it’s 10th Anniversary last year, the partnership between LEGO and Star Wars has gained momentum every year, and shows no signs of stopping now. Most of this year’s sets are centered around the celebration of the 30th Anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back. Four of the twelve sets scheduled for release this year will be related to The Empire Strikes Back.
