Starting today, and continuing for the next 30 days, up to the release of The Dark Knight Rises on June 20th, we will be covering one Batman related product each day in a segment we are calling Daily Dark Knight.
I am kicking this off with my first impressions on the newest game to feature the Caped Crusader, and some of his friends. Lego Batman 2: Dc Superheroes is the sequel to one of the most popular of the LEGO games from Traveler’s Tales. This time, everything has been expanded and a huge new first for LEGO games makes it’s debut.
However, I am pleased to say that none of these additions come at the expense of the things that made Lego Batman great. As the name implies, this time you will not only be playing as Batman or Robin in this game. In expanding to the larger DC Universe, you will be adding the entire Justice League. The lineup of DC’s superteam for this game consists of: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg. Each has their own personality, powers and voice. Yes, that’s right, I said voice. In possibly, the coolest addition yet to the LEGO games, the characters now talk! This really helps bring out the personalities of the characters in the cutscenes.
I don’t want to go too far into the story here, but sufficed to say, it involves the Joker and Lex Luthor teaming up, which leads Batman to, reluctantly, team up with Superman, and, later, the rest of the Justice League.
I’d also like to had it to the level designers for this game. The levels are HUGE and incredibly detailed. There are also a ton of collectibles in each level. The hub world for this game, befitting of the expansion of the world, is Gotham City…ALL OF IT! As Superman, you can actually fly from one end of Gotham to the other. Any character can also enter the Batcave, beneath Wayne Manor and selcta a vehicle and drive it through the streets of Gotham. Eagle eyed players will also find a lot of references to another Batman game that was released not so long ago.
There is a lot more vehicular freedom in this game, with you able to drive through the streets in any vehicle you have unlocked between story levels to your hearts content.
All things considered, so far, this game is a real winner, a lot of fun and a worthy successor to the first game. My full review is coming soon.
