Doctor Who Series 7: Episode 1: Asylum of the Daleks Preview

The Doctor, Amy and Rory return this Saturday, September 1st to BBC One and BBC America with the first of 5 new episodes. The last series began with the Doctor being shot by an Apollo Astronaut on the shores of Lake Silencio in Utah. In the middle, we discovered that River Song is Rory and Amy’s daughter, and that she is the person inside the Astronaut suit. In the end, the Doctor fakes his own death using the Tessalecta, a human looking robot piloted by miniature people. All the while, he is dogged by the spectre of the first question: DOCTOR WHO? At the end of the Christmas Special, the Doctor reveals himself to Rory and Amy, who believed him dead. So, how does Showrunner Steven Moffat plan to top that Series? With the most ambitious opening ever. The episode can be summed up with three simple words, according to Steven: EVERY DALEK EVER! That’s right, the Doctor’s greatest enemies are back in a big way, and Steven is out to make them scary again. In this episode, you will see Daleks from every era of the series, stretching the entire 50 year history! From the very first Daleks encountered by 1st Doctor William Hartnell, all the way up to the current Paradigm Daleks menacing 11th Doctor Matt Smith. Here is the preview of the highly anticipated series opener.

Synopsis:
Kidnapped by his oldest foe, the Doctor is forced on an impossible mission – to a place even the Daleks are too terrified to enter… the Asylum. A planetary prison confining the most terrifying and insane of their kind, the Doctor and the Ponds must find an escape route. But with Amy and Rory’s relationship in meltdown, and an army of mad Daleks closing in, it is up to the Doctor to save their lives, as well as the Pond’s marriage.

My Take: What a way to start a series. This looks like a bare knuckle thrill ride of an episode, which is keeping with the “45 minute mini-movie” idea that is going to exemplify this series. Steven says he’s going to make the Daleks scary again. Remember, as you ponder that phrase, that this is the man who created the Weeping Angels. I can’t wait. Asylum of the Daleks premieres on Saturday, September 1st at 7:20pm on BBC One and BBC One HD and at 9:00pm on BBC America and BBC America HD.
