Review: Underground Toys: Doctor Who 2010: Eleventh Doctor “Crash” set

Our coverage of the 2010 Doctor Who line, which will tie in with the new series, starring Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor, begins with the first figures of Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor.

Eleventh Doctor “Crash” Set

Though the “Regeneration” figure in the “End of Time” assortment released a few months ago is, technically, the first figure of Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor, the two figures including in this two pack are the first of the “Series 5” 2010 Doctor Who line.

These figures benefit from new technology and molding, which sets them apart from previous Doctor Who figure releases. From this two pack on, the Doctor Who figure line will be using face scanning technology for the first time ever. This technology makes the facial likenesses on these figures much more detailed than the one on the “End of Time” Eleventh Doctor figure.  These figures also have more articulation than the previous lines. Starting with these figures, articulation has been added in the lower arm (roto-cut), wrist (roto-cut) and lower leg (roto-cut). This articulation allows these figures to attain the standard for action figures nowadays in terms of articulation.

These two figures are inspires by Matt Smith’s first episode as the Doctor: The Eleventh Hour. The figures showcase the Doctor’s two different looks during the episode: The “Raggedy Doctor” look and the Doctor’s current main series outfit, assembled at the end of the episode. The two pack is called the “Crash” set due to the fact that the Doctor first meets Amy when the TARDIS crashes into her backyard.

The “Raggedy” Doctor figure feature The Eleventh Doctor in the remnants of the Tenth Doctor’s suit. He has lost the jacket, and the pants and shirt are torn and tattered by the crash of the TARDIS. The figure depicts the Doctor, in torn blue, untucked shirt, tie askew, and brown striped pants ripped. The face on this figure is more accurate than the one on the figure in the “End of Time” assortment. This is due to the fact that these figures features face sculpts created with the aid of 3-D scans of Matt Smith’s face. This is the first Doctor Who figure to use the 3-D face scan technology.

The “new outfit” figures perfectly captures the quirky, college professorish, “geek chic” look of the new Doctor. He comes in his Harris tweed coat, complete with dark brown patches at the elbow. The coat also has texture to it, which is amazing. He is wearing a red striped shirt, with a red bow tie. Missing are the suspenders, due to the coat being tacked to the sides of the figure’s torso. Trademark  black rolled up trousers and boots complete the look. The Doctor also comes with his new Sonic Screwdriver, in extended mode. Ironically, this is where one of the accuracy mess-ups occurs. The paint meant to represent the light on the new Sonic Screwdriver is blue, instead of the proper color, green.

This pack is an ideal start to anyone’s Doctor Who figure collection and a fantastic first entry in the 2010 line. My only complaint is that the variant pack, featuring the Doctor in his blue shirt and bow tie, is an exclusive to Toys “R” Us in the UK.  Other than that, this set is a winner. Underground Toys has brought this set over, and it is available in the US from most specialty retailers.

The Eleventh Doctor’s “Crash” Set gets a 5 out of 5.
