Toy Fair 2015: LEGO

Elves

Elves is LEGO’s newest original IP for girls, aiming to combine the whimsy of the Disney Princess sets with the LEGO minidoll figurine pioneered by the LEGO Friends line. Here is a note about the story behind this line.

The line consists of 8 sets, with 6 coming out in March, and the final 2 releasing in August.

I really like this theme and I think it will catch on with girls who like the LEGO Friends, but are looking for a little more fantasy play.

DC Superheroes

Since it is an “off year” for DC movies, the sets will again concentrate on the comics, featuring heavily, as usual, on Batman, but introducing some new characters never before seen and bringing back some old favorites.

2 sets are planned for release in August. They are:

  • 76034 – The Batboat Harbor Pursuit – 264 pieces – $24.99
  • 76035 – Jokerland – 1037 pcs – $119.99

The Batboat set, with it’s brand new “Deathstroke” minifigure is cool, but Jokerland is the real star here. This set is amazingly cool, looking like the most demented amusement pary even. Plus, you get a Batmobile. This one should be on everyone’s wish lists.

Marvel Superheroes

It is NOT an off year for Marvel movies, so the selection here is a bit larger. In addition to sets from Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man, there will also be sets based on the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series. Here’s how the Marvel offerings break down.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Easily one of the most anticipated films of the year, the sequel to the blockbuster team up film sees new characters joining the team to take on the menace of Ultron. LEGO will support the film with 5 sets, all launching in March. They are:

  • 76029 – Iron Man vs. Ultron – 92 pcs – $12.99
  • 76030 – Avengers Hydra Showdown – 220 pcs – $19.99
  • 76031 – The Hulk Buster Smash – 248 pcs – $29.99
  • 76032 – Attack on Avengers Tower – 515 pcs – $59.99
  • 76038 – The Quinjet City Chase – 722 pcs – $79.99

I am really looking forward to these sets, particularly the Hulk Buster set, which features the very impressive armor suit and the Avengers Tower set, which is quite a large and detailed model.

Ant-Man

Flying a little further under the radar is Ant-Man, which tells the story of a scientist with a special suit that endows him with the properties of an ant, meaning he shrinks in size, but has super strength. LEGO is releasing a single set in June to support the film

  • 76039 – Ant-Man Final Battle – 183 pcs – $19.99

I think the coolest part about this set is how LEGO has decided to use Duplo pieces to convey the sense of scale.

Ultimate Spider-Man

The line based on the animated series continues with two new sets which release in August. They are:

  • 76036 – Carnage’s S.H.I.E.L.D. Sky Attack – 97 pcs – $12.99
  • 76037 – Rhino and Sandman Super Villain Team-Up – 386 pcs – $39.99

Both of the sets have cool features. The Carnage minifigure in the smaller set has spinning tentacles, and the Spider-Man minifigure featured in that set is actually Miles Morales! The Rhino/Sandman set features a really neat armor suit for Rhino. I love how parts of the construction site are made to look like giant hands made of sand. This set also include an “Iron Spider” minifigure.
